What is Flint?
Flint is the startup I founded in Singapore with my co-founder Jeremy, aiming to tackle climate change through technology. Our vision from the start has been to create sustainable solutions that redefine energy storage. After years of research and development, Flint’s first major innovation is a paper-based battery, designed to be cheaper, safer, and more environmentally friendly than traditional lithium-ion batteries.
Why Batteries?
Energy storage is a critical challenge in the transition to renewable energy. While solar and wind power are essential, they are intermittent, creating the need for efficient, scalable storage solutions. Traditional lithium-ion batteries have been the go-to solution, but they are expensive, rely on rare and toxic materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, and have a high environmental cost in production and disposal.
Flint’s paper battery technology offers a groundbreaking solution to these problems. By using sustainable, biodegradable materials like cellulose, we create an energy storage solution that is not only much cheaper but also safer and more environmentally friendly. Our technology has the potential to disrupt industries ranging from renewable energy storage to consumer electronics and electric vehicles.
Building Flint
Flint’s journey began in 2019 with a shared vision of creating impactful solutions for the future. As the Head of Product & Innovation, I worked tirelessly to build the technology from scratch, and through years of testing and refinement, we developed a battery that meets the needs of today’s energy challenges. Our paper battery has passed rigorous tests, proving its efficiency, flexibility, and potential for widespread use.
Achievements and Recognition
Flint has been recognized globally for its innovation. We were named one of the Top 20 most innovative startups at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024, and our technology won the top award at a European Union-sponsored global competition. Additionally, through the U.S. State Department, I had the opportunity to present our technology at the White House, MIT, and the United Nations, where Flint garnered attention from global leaders and investors.
Looking Ahead
As we move into pilot production, Flint is set to scale its technology for broader commercial applications. We’re focused on renewable energy storage, consumer electronics, and electric vehicles, with plans to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and make sustainable energy storage more accessible worldwide. Flint’s paper battery is just the beginning of a new era in energy storage technology.
