National Service: A Journey of My Duty and Growth

When I first moved to Singapore at the age of 18, I had to navigate an entirely new world—different culture, traditions, food, and language. Leaving everything I knew behind, I was faced with a unique challenge: to serve two years in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) as part of my National Service. This was not only a requirement for me but also for my family. As my parents were overseas Permanent Residents, I had to fulfill this duty, or they would face legal consequences. It was a heavy responsibility, but it also became a defining moment in my life.

A Transformative Experience

Joining the military in a foreign country without knowing much about the culture or language was daunting, but it turned out to be one of the most enriching experiences of my life. As an infantry soldier, I was trained to operate armored military vehicles and participate in war simulations in the dense Singaporean forests. These challenging exercises taught me resilience, leadership, and how to work under pressure, while the camaraderie and discipline of the military life shaped my character and work ethic. Despite the initial hurdles, I embraced every moment, learning how to overcome obstacles and contribute meaningfully to my team.

Facing New Challenges

National Service became more than just a military obligation—it was about service to my new home. In addition to the demanding physical training, I was called upon to help on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic. I assisted with quarantine efforts and supported health protocols, giving me a deeper understanding of civic duty and how critical the role of every individual is in times of crisis. It was a powerful reminder that National Service isn’t just about defense but about contributing to the welfare and well-being of the community.

Maximizing Every Opportunity

While I had no choice but to serve, I realized that this experience was an opportunity to grow, not just as a soldier, but as a person. I embraced every challenge, from operating military equipment to navigating war simulations, and pushed myself to maximize every moment. The two years in the SAF became a transformative period where I developed invaluable skills, deepened my sense of discipline, and learned to adapt to unfamiliar situations. What started as an obligation turned into an experience that shaped who I am today.
